Maya Temple II in Tikal, Guatemala

Tikal (or Tik’al, according to the more current orthography) is the largest of the ancient ruined cities of the Maya civilization. It is located in the El Petén department of Guatemala at 17°13′19″N, 89°37′22″W. Now part of Guatemala’s Tikal National Park, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist spot.

It is wonderful to get here early in the day (beating the crowds who fly in from Guatemala city for a day trip) and see the dense jungle and fog over this ancient city. When you hike through the jungle you will feel like an explorer, not knowing if the hill in front of you is just a natural feature or another temple, covered by the fast-growing trees and grass…
We like to think of ourselves as a highly civilized society, though practice shows otherwise. These old and long forgotten societies can teach us some things maybe? Wonderful place…
